Admirals Gameday

Postby jwhouk on 06 Feb 2009, 18:05

The slightly-infrequently updated Game Day thread for talking about the Admirals latest victims... er, I mean, Opponents.

Tonight, February 6, 2009 at the JBP Rink @ Bradley Center: it's the Rockford Ice Hogs (aka the Baby Blackhawks). It's Cal O'Reilly Bobblehead night!

You know, the Admirals keep this up, I'm going to be SICK of Frostys from Wendy's by year's end.

Admirals hang a four-spot on the Ice Hogs, beating second-place Rockford 4-1 in front of 6,527 at the Bradley Center.

Goals from Franson, Peters, Maki and Mike Santorelli outweighed Klinkhammer's first goal for the Hogs. Macintyre stopped 26 of 27 to earn a deserved 2nd star behind Ryan Maki and just ahead of Mike Santorelli. You honestly could have had your pick of stars tonight - which is always a good thing.

Admirals played an excellent forechecking game, stealing the puck off of Rockford players' sticks frequently in the later stages of the game. Complexion of the game changed after Franson tied the game up in the second

The only thing that kept this game from being 8-1 or more was the 8 times the Ads were shorthanded. The Ads, to their credit, killed all eight penalties. However, they sure didn't look like they were one of the AHL's best power-play teams during the last penalty at the end of the second period.

An aside: Ryan Fraser was the referee tonight; he did not seem to be thrilled at being in Milwaukee at all. I noticed that the last time (and, possibly only other time) he was the ref, he also called a ton of penalties during that game.

The Skille/Ortmeyer fight was incredibly one-sided. Skille got up in Jed's face, and Jed pounded him for about 10 seconds before Skille dropped to a knee.

A pretty enjoyable night for the first of three straight. Good thing the road game tomorrow is just down the road in Rosemont.

What's with all the penalties tho?? Why are the Ads giving up so many? Or was it just a bad night for that?

The penalty issue was, I suspect a ref that wasn't all that familiar with the team or teams. Fraser hadn't officiated a game in Milwaukee in over a year, so I suspect he was going to crack down on everything.

Ads broke their one-game losing streak tonight with a 5-4 win over the Rivermen. (No word as to whether or not Legace was in the building. Suspect he wasn't.)

Cal O'Reilly scored a hat trick in the first two periods, and the Admirals never really trailed. Only bad thing was the last-second six-on-five "power play" that made it closer than it appeared.

It's true... Don't be like Mike (Phelps):

All fans who are graduates of a DARE program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) can get into the game for just $2 by bringing their DARE graduation certificate to the Admirals’ office or the Bradley Center box office. In addition, anyone with the name Michael, Phelps, Mary Jane, Cheech, Chong, Weed (Wied) or anyone who has won an Olympic Gold Medal can also get their ticket for only $2.

...The Ads will also be giving away a weed wacker, courtesy of National Ace Hardware, that will be signed by the team and if the Admirals score with 4:20 left on the clock in any period one lucky fan will win a season ticket for the 2009-10 season. The number 420 is often known as the police code for illegal drug use.

Plus, to ensure that no one ends up in the same predicament as Michael Phelps, the team will provide a document shredder at the DigiCopy Information Table outside section 225 so fans can bring any embarrassing or incriminating photos to be destroyed.

Admirals are taking on the Woofies tonight at the BC as we speak. No score late in the first period.
